CoolSculpting®: Non-invasive Body Contouring

Although proper diet and exercise contribute greatly to maintaining a healthy figure, we can still develop stubborn pockets of fat that are resistant to all of our best efforts. With many people shying away from procedures like liposuction, a new alternative is gaining momentum in the body-contouring community.

What is CoolSculpting®?

Cryolipolysis, the scientific term for “coolsculpting”, is a non-invasive procedure that freezes and kills fat cells in areas that are often blanketed by stubborn fat. The body naturally eliminates the dead cells within 1 to 3 months after treatment, which results in a 20% to 25% fat reduction in the treated areas.

Spot-treatment can be difficult to accomplish through diet and exercise, so health professionals are starting to point their patients to CoolSculpting® for their body contouring needs. The FDA has cleared nine areas of the body for CoolSculpting® treatment including chin, jawline, thighs, abdomen, flanks, bra fat, back fat, underarms, and under the buttocks.

The Procedure and Results

Once a patient is approved and has indicated their concern areas, a personalized plan is put in place for their treatment. A template is applied to their skin and the areas requiring attention are marked. After applying a gel pad to the marked area, the handheld applicator is moved over the skin and administers the suction and cooling technology. Each area takes around 45 minutes.

Though some patients can see improvement in as little as three weeks, the most dramatic results are visible within 1-3 months, with final results appearing as far as six months or more after the last session. Your consultant will be able to inform you of the approximate time it will take for results to be visible and will also tell you how many sessions you need.

Is CoolSculpting® right for me and are there side effects?

Not everyone should attempt CoolSculpting®. If you have cryoglobulinemia, cold agglutinin disease, or paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria, this procedure is definitely not for you. CoolSculpting® is not about weight loss, it is about fat reduction, so the best candidates are those who are focusing on weight maintenance, live a healthy lifestyle, and are looking for body sculpting in specific areas. Always ask your doctor before seeking contouring procedures for your body.

There are few side effects to this treatment, with the most common being swelling, redness, soreness, numbness, tingling, or discomfort. All of these symptoms should fade within a few days.

How much does it cost?

Though CoolSculpting® can be expensive and is a treatment not yet covered by insurance, it is often less expensive than other procedures such as liposuction. Additionally, CoolSculpting® is non-invasive, with very little recovery time, and unlike other costly and often painful body-shaping treatments, the results are permanent.

Procedure costs depend on the areas you wish to treat and how many treatments are needed. Most patients opt for multiple areas and sessions.  A provider will customize a CoolSculpting® treatment plan that’s unique to you and your body contouring goals.  Payment plans are also available.
